The Whole Counsel of God’s Word

Now it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spoke to the children of Israel according to all that the Lord had given him as commandments to them.  Deuteronomy 1:3

The Book of Deuteronomy is really a group of sermons by Moses to a new generation of Israelites as they prepared to cross over the Jordan River into the Promised Land. “You don’t have to repeat the sins and failures of your parents” Moses tells them, “You can be successful in your walk with God.” But how? As he shares these messages, Moses was sure to tell them “all that the Lord had given him as commandments to them.”

Just like the Israelites in the Wilderness, you and I would do well to follow after and obey the entire counsel of God’s Word. Paul declared in 2 Timothy 3:16-17, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work."

When Paul wrote: “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God” he meant to say the scriptures came to us by a divine act of God where He has revealed both Himself personally and His will for mankind globally.

“You mean I can know God’s will for my life just by reading the Bible?” you ask. Absolutely. If you have ever played organized sports then you know the value of a good coach. He can transform a bunch of misfits (like me) into a winning team by teaching them to practice all the principles and rules of the game. Men like Moses and Paul realized that the Bible is our “coach” and a daily dose of reading the Bible keeps on top of our game spiritually.

Jesus said in Matthew 4:4 “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”

Just like the Israelites getting ready to receive the Promised Land, what does God have waiting for you? Why not read your Bible and find out? Near his death Patrick Henry said, “Here is a book, the Bible, worth more than all others that were ever printed; yet it is my misfortune never to have found time to read it.”

Lord, we ask You to instruct us as we daily read your word. Give us victory over all the areas of our lives spiritually as we study to show ourselves approved. In Jesus name, Amen?

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Bob
